Editor, The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study has shown that maltreatment in childhood contributes to health problems throughout the lives of children. These problems include chronic diseases, heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, which profoundly affect their lives and are very expensive to treat. Knowing this, why are we locking up children at the border under such terrible conditions? Some of these children will be United States citizens, and if they are not, they will be returned to their troubled countries in much worse condition than we Americans found them. The current administration behaves as if locking up immigrants and asylum-seekers is the only possible path; ho...
Editor, A very significant and politically clarifying thing happened to me recently. Two of my very dear and valued friends, one from Utah and the other from here, talked with me on the same day with the same message. The day was June 28, and the message was about healing our nation. The focus of my frien...
Summer reading list shared Editor, Human knowledge has exploded in the years since the invention of the printing press and the Gutenberg Bible (about 1450). Now, there are lots of “good books.” Here is a short list for summer reading, which could enhance a reader’s understandi...
Editor, I have learned one thing from Gene Johnson. One need not investigate or research for the facts of history. If you do not like what the facts say, just dismiss them and make up your own version and pass it off as fact. There is no sense discussing the past with someone with so little regard for evi...

Editor, On May 10, I called Tribal Police and Lake County because there’s been a four-wheeler and a dirt bike (not street legal) that only show up after the school bus goes by my place at 4 p.m. From 4:30 to 5 p.m. they show up and my 75-year-old friend that lives around the corner from me told me t...

Everyone who would like to visit with others in town for the fun of it is welcome. Snacks will be served. Bring your own drinks...
Editor, This letter contains a poem. It is not in poetic form but can be read as such. It was composed on Memorial Day as I was viewing and hearing all the emotions that are connected with me as an 88-year-old former Army soldier. My earlier years, during WWII, made a very significant impression upon m...
