Editor, December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. It opportunely coincides with the holidays when folks are going to parties, reconnecting with old friends, and maybe indulging more than they do the rest of the year. Wherever you’re going this Christmas season, please never get behind the wheel impaired. While I’m encouraged that this year our alcohol-related traffic fatalities are down from the last two years, just one death on our highways because drugs or alcohol is too many. This year, there have been 53 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Montana and drugs have been a factor in 24 traffic deaths - All 100 percent preventable. When someone gets...
Editor, Our nation, the United States of America, is presently in political crisis. We have never had a person running for president who wanted to lead our nation with a political system other than a democracy. Donald Trump is the first person trying to accomplish this with an autocratic/dictatorial form ...
Editor, We are writing in response to an article written by James C. Nelson in the Dec. 6 issue of the Valley Journal. He is also a frequent contributor to the Missoulian. Mr. Nelson was an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court from 1993-2012 and was appointed by Marc Racicot. This position, by d...
Editor, Der Fuhrer is here. As I read James C Nelson’s letter to the editor I was impressed with his candor and his inability to judge what is actually happening, especially since he is a former judge. Editor, I appreciated my time spent on this 95-mill property tax issue with you, the Department of Revenue and the lobbyist for the school organizations. I am disappointed with the Supreme Court ruling but will abide with it. The educational value of researching and understanding how the school, local gov...
Editor, Here’s a novel idea on the subject of abortion. Don’t get pregnant. I’m 80 years old and grew up in an era void of legal abortion or birth control. If we got pregnant, we had the little darlings. Then a miracle. The birth control pill was developed. It was control fin...
Editor, Imagine this: feeling deep, soul-filling joy amongst mostly strangers, two evenings in a row. That’s what happened to me. Curious? Friday night, Mission Valley Live presented a concert highlighting Robin Layne and the Rhythm Makers. It was a knee-bouncing, energy-filled evening of incredi...
Editor, I am not vermin. I am not a thug. I am not radical. Yet in his Veteran’s Day speech that is literally what Donald Trump called me and other voters who oppose him. I am your constituent and I expect you to stand up for me and other Montanans who don’t support treating anyone like ver...
Editor, Our nation’s system of government stands on the cusp of change. We either choose Trump’s authoritative/dictatorial style of government or retain our democratic system of government. The Trump tirades have captured the imagination and support, home and abroad, of significant numbers of ...
Editor, Well, it’s clear now: A vote for a Republican is a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare. How do we know this? Because a Republican just said the quiet part out loud. During Republicans’ second (failed) attempt to install rightwing extremist Jim Jordan as the next House Spe...
