ST. IGNATIUS — The Mission Bulldog tennis players tied with Troy on Saturday, 3-3. At No. 1 singles, Mission’s Karl Daniels beat Troy’s Bruce Metz 6-2, 6-1.
“Karl Daniels has been playing well, and today’s match was probably his best so far in returning and keeping his composure,” head coach Kimimi Ashley said. “He will be having important matches this week against Loyola on Tuesday and a tournament in Bigfork on Saturday, (which) will kind of give us a look at where he is at in the field of other top players that are having a good year so far.”
Another important match to give St. Ignatius the tie rather than a loss was Robbie Erickson’s contest against Troy’s Craig Helmrick, where Erickson won 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
“(Erickson) is a young players and still needs some fine-tuning, but (he is) working hard on the things that will make him better to finish matches sooner,” Ashley said.
Troy Bontrager also picked up a win over CJ Beard, 6-4, 6-0.
“Bontrager has been playing well so far this year,” Ashley noted. “He seems to be mentally willing to work a bit harder on the court during matches and just not accept a loss. The mental part of his game will help a lot in how he comes out at the state tournament.”
Mission traveled to Loyola Tuesday and will compete at the Bigfork Flight Tournament on Saturday.
