ST. IGNATIUS — The Mission-Charlo grapplers took third at the Superior Invitational Saturday after a disappointing loss to Thompson Falls earlier in the week.
In an exciting dual that came down to the final matches, the Mission-Charlo wrestling team suffered a loss in its first meet Dec. 4, despite several exciting matches. Steven Bravo pulled off a pin at 160 in the final seconds of the match, which was “simply inspirational,” coach Lyle Cronk noted. Jamie Mullins, Jay Wadsworth and Kyle Couture picked up two pins apiece. Morgan Schultz, Jacen Petersen, Emilio Bravo and Zach Daniels also earned pins.
On Saturday, Mission-Charlo got a boost of confidence, placing third as a team at the Superior Invitational.
“Our younger wrestlers were the key to us placing third,” Cronk said. “We had five wrestlers who were just a match away from placing, and six wrestlers placed at the tournament.”
Jay Wadsworth, Israel Lafrombois, Pascoe Green, Kyle Couture and Joseph Hawkins each went 2-2, while Ethan Goss and Tyler Spidel went 1-2. Morgan Schultz placed third, pinning Ty Height from Libby in 23 seconds; Jamie Mullins placed third, pinning Jonathon Blanchard from Frenchtown in 1:27; Steven Bravo placed fourth, losing to Robert Jennings from Cutbank by injury default; and Jacen Petersen placed first, pinning David Andersen from Frenchtown in 5:27. Joseph Hawkins placed fourth, losing to William Ollinger from Browning by pin in 2:27; Emilio Bravo placed fourth losing to Jasen Gervais from Browning 0-4; and Barret Sargent placed first, defeating Rand Pritzkau from Frenchtown 5-2.
“We had several wrestlers wrestle very well. Jamie Mullins wrestled a great match in the semifinal round against last year’s divisional champ, Zach Durden, coming from behind and scoring the last several points of the match,” Cronk said.
Barret Sargent also had a great win at 215, finishing his finals match with a blast double, ending any ideas his opponent had of mounting a comeback.
“Jacen Petersen continues to dominate his competition, and he will only continue to improve,” Cronk said. “Overall, I was most excited to see some of our younger wrestlers stepping it up and getting pins; that means we are improving as a team, and we have high goals for our team at the end of the year.”
