ST. IGNATIUS - The recommended daily allowance for salt is 2300mg per day (one teaspoon). Salt does add flavor to food, but too much can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Cutting back on salt lowers health risks and improves health. What to substitute? Try squeezing lemon on roasted vegetables, using lemon zest in a mixture of spices for a meat rub, and squeezing lemon in chicken noodle soup, are just a few examples. Vinegar is another choice that brightens flavor and reduces the bitterness in vegetables. There are different vinegar types (apple cider and balsamic are good choices). Read food labels, especially processed foods, which are typically high in sodium.
