The Polson boys soccer team improved to 4-1-2 after picking up wins against Bigfork and Columbia Falls last week. Against Columbia Falls, the Pirates started out strong, as they utilized solid passing and ball control to score two goals during the opening four minutes of the game to win their second shutout of the season.
“That had Columbia Falls back on their heels, and it set the tone of the rest of the game,” head coach Jess Kittle said. “It was great to see our offense put a big number up on the board.”
Pirate James Larson continued to play well, scoring four goals and two assists. Jon Heutmaker also played well, adding three goals for Polson.
“I really like how we were able to possess the ball and move it around to look for a breakdown in their defense,” Kittle said. “We did a much better job of moving up and down the field, keep good spacing and being open for passes.”
On Thursday, Polson hosted Bigfork in a Northwestern A contest, where the Pirates finished strong to down the Vikings, 4-2.
The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders, taking an early 1-0 lead at the four-minute mark when Kyle Thomson scored a penalty kick. The Pirates fought back, scoring three consecutive goals to lead 3-1 after making adjustments at halftime.
Freshman Morgan Moll and senior keeper Peregrine Frissell both scored the first varsity goals of their careers, as Moll scored at the 49-minute mark, and Frissell scored on a penalty kick at the 66-minute mark.
Riley Lemm and Jon Murphy both scored goals by taking a little power off their shots to accurately pass the ball into the back of the net.
“Murphy’s goal came from his left foot,” Kittle said. “He’s been working hard to improve his left over the past few seasons, and it was great to see him get a goal off his left.”
Kittle added that he was impressed with Nick Howell’s job at playing sweeper, considering Bigfork’s strong attack on offense.
