Editor,
Voting is an American principle and a basic democratic right that should be protected, promoted and practiced. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the 24th Amendment are legally considered issues related to our election system.
And yet, in 2021, we have an onslaught of 2021 legislators from all but three states who have introduced hundreds of bills aimed at removing voter access.
In this backlash to historic voter turnout in the 2020 general election, and grounded in a rash of baseless and racist allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities, lawmakers have introduced well over four times the number of bills to restrict voting access compared to last year.
In overview, 33 states have introduced 165 bills to restrict voting access to: 1) limit mail voting; 2) impose stricter voter ID requirement; 3) slash voter registration opportunities; 4) enable more aggressive voter roll purges.
These bills are an unmistakable response to the unfounded and dangerous lies about fraud that followed the 2020 election.
Furthermore, how does any of this activity harken back to the words of our Founding Fathers who called us to make a more perfect union. Our vote is a right and a privilege. Remember that. Stand up for your right. Fight for your right to vote. Do not allow lawmakers to vote it away from you.
