PABLO — Valley schools closed the chapter on the 2013-2014 basketball season but not without a little bit of fun. All-star players took to the court one last time on Tuesday proving not only do they have the skills to compete with the best of the best but also giving the fans what they came for – laughter, sportsmanship, friendship, and a great showdown.
Emceed by the legendary Coach Les Rice, boys filled two teams of 11 and girls filled two teams of 12, Lights against the Darks, in front of the packed bleachers at the Salish Kootenai College Joe McDonald Gymnasium. All-star athletes from Arlee, Ronan, Polson, Mission, Charlo, Two Eagle River, Hot Springs, Bigfork and Plains participated.
Up first to show their game faces, aka smiles, were the girls. The Darks were on fire right out of the gate toppling the Lights 68-59. Lady Bulldog senior Courtney Charlo led the Darks netting 14 points. Scarlet Alexis Shick put up 12 points with 10 in the first half thanks to a couple of three-pointers. Lady Pirate Nichole Lake and Lady Eagle Tyra Michel each helped with 10 points of their own. Every player on the girls’ Dark team logged points in the scorebook. The Lights were led by Scarlet Whitney Malatare. The all-state/all-conference title holder high scored both teams with 20 points.
The boys took over the stage in the second game with the boys’ Lights proving domination behind Mission’s Stuart Grant’s explosive 25 points and Eagle Robert Jansen right behind with 23, 18 scored from the three-point range. Arlee’s Josh Reed added 15, helping the Light’s to the 129-111 victory. Although the Darks took the loss, it was not without superb performances from Warrior Patrick BigSam scoring 22 points for his team, Bulldog Jarred Brown chipped in 20 and Pirate Andrew Weltz with 15. Weltz added excitement from the crowd as he slammed in a dunk not once but three times bringing the season to an end. Valley teams will be saying farewell to its seniors but each team boasts young talent running up the ranks and ready to take on next season with a fury.
