Editor,
I see once again taxpayers are scrutinizing and checking out the accountability of our Rural Fire Board of Polson. The Polson Rural built a new fire hall on the county fairgrounds. This was to be in lieu of Polson Rural paying rent to Polson City to keep Rural fire equipment in Polson’s Fire Hall. But late last summer the Polson Rural Fire Board paid the City of Polson $15,000 anyway. Now the Polson Rural Fire Board has implemented the “new crash fee” where any vehicle accident that fire trucks are dispatched to can be billed. (This will be all county and state vehicles, including out of county and out of state.) Hmm, I wonder what a tourist traveling through our fine state, who has the misfortune of an accident, will feel like when they are then billed by our fire departments. I’m sure they will feel most welcome and can’t wait to come back again and will also tell their friends how they were treated in Montana.
Polson Rural Board myth number eight (8) - Insurance companies are just going to pay these “crash fees” - insurance rates are based on given geographic areas - if an area has an increase in costs - guess what, the insurance company will raise premiums to cover their costs. Insurance companies are not charitable organizations. Who will get these new costs - oh yes, the local taxpayer again.
As many have seen or read in the paper “the Polson Fire Board’s put out eight (8) myths” - they did miss myth number 9 - The Polson Fire Board is looking out for the rural taxpayers.
