These are essential components to the health and well-being of Native communities, and this year, the Administration for Native Americans is providing more than $45 million, including $15 million for new awards, to help fund community-based projects that address these conditions.
The Administration for Native Americans, also known as ANA, is a program office within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They have recently published several funding opportunities, with several more scheduled for release in the coming weeks. Announcements can be downloaded at www.grants.gov.
ANA provides funding in three program areas: social and economic development strategies, Native American languages, and environmental regulatory enhancement. To receive ANA funding, communities develop their own project plans and submit them for review.
What’s unique about ANA’s funding is that, unlike many other Federal agencies, ANA funding is very flexible and grantees are encouraged to submit projects that are driven by their community and are inclusive of their culture. Each community identifies their goal towards achieving a long-term community vision.
ANA also offers free training and technical assistance to all potential applicants throughout the process, as well as several resources including an application toolkit and Pre-Application Training Manual, which helps applicants with “nuts and bolts” information on the federal application process and ANA FOAs.
