WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed Congressman Greg Gianforte’s bill to name a Missoula post office in honor of Jeannette Rankin.
The legislation, H.R. 1972, names the post office at 1100 West Kent Ave. in Missoula after Rankin, a pioneering champion for women’s suffrage and the first woman elected to Congress.
Ahead of the vote, Gianforte encouraged House lawmakers to pass his bill. “Jeanette Rankin was a trailblazer for women’s rights in our nation. It’s my honor to recognize her and her lasting contributions to our country. I urge my colleagues to join me in honoring Jeannette Rankin by renaming the post office, in her hometown of Missoula, in her memory,” Gianforte said.
On March 28, Gianforte introduced the legislation in the House, and U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) introduced S. 953 in the Senate.
Daines welcomed House passage of their bicameral bill. “Jeannette Rankin was a trailblazer and a leader young Montanans still look up to today,” Daines said. “I’m glad to see Congressman Gianforte’s bill pass the U.S. House and will continue working to advance my bill in the U.S. Senate so we can move forward in designating this post office in her honor.”
Earlier in Women’s History Month, Gianforte recognized Rankin and her historic accomplishments in a speech on the House floor.
