ST. IGNATIUS — Veterans Day is a celebration to honor all military veterans on Nov. 11. During the 11th hour, the Mission Valley Honor Guard came together at the Veteran’s Wall to remember and celebrate that day.

The date for the holiday was originally set as the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, Nov. 11, 1918, and it has developed into a day to celebrate all veterans, different from Memorial Day, a day that honors people who died during military service.

New flags for the different branches of service were raised on the poles behind the Veterans Wall before the ceremony. And on the wall, several new names had been added to the dozens of names of local military members that have passed away.

During the ceremony, Honor Guard members lined up in front of the wall, carrying the American flag along with local and state flags. Other guard members stood ready to sound off the three-volley salute. Mission Valley Honor Guard Commander JC Courville saluted the names on the wall. People turned out to celebrate veterans and listen to his speech as fog rolled across town.

“These were ordinary people who responded in extraordinary ways,” Commander Courville said.

Last year during the holiday, a cold front made for a chilly celebration so many people said they preferred the fog. Courville said the guard turns out to honor veterans in any kind of weather.

“This is a way to say we honor them all,” he said.
