2012 Fall Mack Days begins soon
POLSON — The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are sponsoring the 2012 Fall Mack Days on Flathead Lake. It will be held Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 21-Nov.11, and the last 10 days of the contest are all fishing contest days. Great prizes can be won and a fish fry will be held on Nov. 11 for all participants and their families at Blue Bay. Quilt class, meeting held at Terrace Lake Church
RONAN — The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting at noon, Nov. 3, during the Thread Painting Class at the Terrace Lake Community Church, east of Ronan. Presbyterians to serve pasty lunch on Election Day
POLSON — On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Polson Presbyterian Church, across from Linderman School at 301 4th Ave. E., is holding a pasty lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The lunch includes a homemade pasty with gravy, salad, vegetable, cake and beverage and costs $6 for adults and $3 for children. Award-winning poet to give reading
PABLO — A poetry reading and book signing by acclaimed Inuit poet, (and SKC alum) will take place at SKC Johnny Arlee and Victor Charlo Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 12-1 p.m. Poet, dg nanouk okpik, is Inupiaq, Inuit, originally from Alaska’s arctic slope and will read from her book, “Corpse Whale.” She is a recipient of a Truman Capote Fellowship.

Jay Cross to present photographs, stories
POLSON — “Being There: Landscape and Wildlife Photographs from Montana, the Dakotas, and Wyoming” by Jay Cross, will be the next evening program of the Mission Mountain Audubon Society on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., in the Polson Library meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Join us for a presentation of Jay’s images and the stories behind a few of them. Many of the pictures are part of his exhibit of 46-framed photos at the Red Poppy Gallery in Ronan. The exhibit runs through Nov. 20.
Jay is a Polson-based landscape and wildlife photographer, whose passion is making fine-art prints. He is current the Gallery Director at the Sandpiper Art Gallery on Polson’s Main Street.

Speaker to discuss Kerr Dam
POLSON — The Masumola Club meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at the clubhouse. The social gathering begins at 5:45 p.m., potluck at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. The program will feature Brian Lipscomb who will discuss the history and current status of Kerr Dam.
The clubhouse is located on Masumola Road, (turn onto Rocky Point off of Highway 93 and after the 3-mile marker turn right onto Masumola Road. The clubhouse is 1/4 mile on the right). ‘Mrs. Claus is Missing’ to be performed in Ronan
RONAN — The theatre season opens on Nov. 9-10 at the Ronan Performing Arts Center when the elementary students, grades kindergarten through second grade, present “Mrs. Claus is Missing.” Performances begin at 7 p.m. This is an enchanting musical all about the power of believing. Don’t miss Santa, the elves and others that are sure to delight audiences of all ages. Book-signing planned for local author

Three sizes of pies on sale at apple festival
POLSON — The apple festival and fall bazaar at Immaculate Conception Church in Polson is scheduled for Nov. 9, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. You may preorder apple pies or select them on that date.

All invited to celebrate library centennial
POLSON — North Lake County Public Library in Polson is celebrating its 100th birthday with a party for the public on Saturday, Nov. 10.
The event will take place in the library meeting room from 1-3 pm. There will be birthday cake, ice cream and entertainment.
Names will be drawn for a prize from those who have participated in the library’s calendar of activities in past months and placed their names in the jar at the circulation desk.
Entertainment will feature puppeteer Sherry Johns from Kalispell. Sherry has performed at several previous library events and is very popular with adults and children alike.
The birthday party completes North Lake County Public Library’s 100-year celebration, which began during the summer and included an old-fashioned ice cream social, an entry in Polson’s Fourth of July parade, and two book reading/signing events featuring bestselling author Jamie Ford, along with historic displays and a special exhibit.

Honor guard to perform veteran memorial services
ST. IGNATIUS — Mission Valley honor guard will be doing services on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the veterans’ memorial in St. Ignatius. Wool design contest open to all ages
RONAN — The Make It With Wool district one contest will be held Nov. 11 at the Ronan High School Library beginning at noon.
District 1 includes the counties of Flathead, Granite, Lake, Lincoln, Mineral, Missoula, Ravalli, Sanders, and Northern Powell.
The contest is open to pre-teens ages 12 and under, juniors ages 13-16, seniors ages 17-24, adults age 25 and older and sewing for others (any age). Ages should be as of Dec. 31, 2012.
Pre-teen, junior, senior, and adult contestants must select, construct and model their own garments. Garments made for other people must be modeled by the intended wearer.
The construction fabric or yarn must be 60-100 percent wool. The yarn may be mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel, or llama.
The contest is open to quilts, afghans, wall hangings, table runners and 56-72-inch throws. An individual or group of any age may construct an item.

Gender violence prevention expert to speak
PABLO — Dr. Jackson Katz, who is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in gender violence prevention education in schools, sports culture and the military, as well as for his pioneering work in critical media literacy, will be speaking in Lake County and the Flathead Reservation on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Thanks to a grant from Verizon, DOVES is bringing Dr. Katz for an invitation-only men’s leadership breakfast in the morning, followed by a public multi-media presentation, “More Than a Few Good Men: Strategies for Inspiring Men and Boys to be Allies in Gender Violence Prevention,” at the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theater on the Salish Kootenai College campus in Pablo at 11:30 a.m. A light lunch will be served in the theater lobby at 11 a.m.

Group to share holiday recipes using herbs
POLSON — “Thyme for Herbs Group” will meet Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at the North Lake County Public Library meeting room, 2 First Avenue, E., (use the east side door). This will be an informal gathering instead of a lesson. Our theme is “Using Herbs in Holiday Foods.” We are asking people to bring samples of a food featuring herbs, to share with the group and printed copies of the recipe for about 20 people. Flathead Basin Commission to meet
KALISPELL — Members of the Flathead Basin Commission will hold a meeting on Nov. 14, 2012 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation office, 655 Timberwolf Parkway, Kalispell.
During the morning, the meeting will be devoted to administration updates, and a discussion of the FBC legislative agenda regarding Aquatic Invasive Species. In the afternoon there will be an overview of the priority projects currently being undertaken by the county. Discussions about the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem Education Consortium and the Stoltz Greenhouse Project in Columbia Falls will also take place.

Maori history, culture focus of lecture
PABLO — Salish Kootenai College President’s Guest Lecture Series welcomes Karl Rangikawhiti Leonard Friday, Nov. 16, at noon in the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theatre on the SKC campus in Pablo.
Leonard will present a history of the Maori people of New Zealand, commencing from the migration of the Maori from Rangiatea in the Tahiti region to Aotearoa, New Zealand, from pre-European contact through to post-contact today, showing examples of inter-generational exchange and the role Maori play in New Zealand society today.
