POLSON – A flat-footed Polson girls soccer team let Park High School’s team build a convincing lead during the first half at Polson on Saturday. Eventually Park High downed Polson 6-2. Annie Venter had three shots, with one goal, while Sarah Howell also finished with one of her three shots finding the goal. Madeline Hewston fired three shots, but finished with one assist.

“We started the game slow and without urgency,” head coach Michael Hewston said. “There was little, to no communication from Polson on the field.”

This caused Polson to not work as a group, allowing Park to strike first, and continue scoring on the Lady Pirates.

“There was some issue with the midfield assisting in the defensive third,” Hewston noted. “ At halftime the issue was resolved, however, by that time Park High led 5-1.”

After the halftime fix, Polson began playing together, moving better to the ball, but continued to play without urgency, Hewston said.

“Adjustments in the defense and midfield stopped the bleeding,” he said. “And we were able to hold Park to one goal.”

According to Hewston, he’s been pleasantly surprised with the hard work and quality of play from Sara Robinson, who plays midfield for the Lady Pirates.

“She’s really made an impression on this team the last two games,” he said. “What she lacks in field experience she makes up for in hustle and desire.”

Howell says he will continue to try to get his girls to play with urgency, as it’s key to compete with area teams.

“Although there were some players who stood out, without urgency and hustle on behalf of the whole team it will be almost impossible to compete,” Hewston said.

On Tuesday Polson will host Whitefish at home in a match up of two area powerhouse soccer teams. Hewston says he will prepare his team by taking a good look at urgency and speed in practice.
