POLSON — Half a steer and half a pig purchased at the Lake County 4-H Market Sale were donated to Polson Loaves and Fish Food Pantry, Inc., by Glacier Bank. Raised by Lake County 4-H youth, the beef and pork were also processed locally at White’s Meats. To buy this much meat would cost approximately $1,900.
According to statistics from the pantry, it served 195 households, approximately 1,313 people, during the first quarter of 2011. These clients received 27,992 pounds of food, which averages 21 pounds of food per person. Many times pantry clients cannot afford to buy meat so the Glacier Bank donation will help a lot of people.
Bryan River, Operations Manager at the pantry, said he’s heard talk of up to a 50 percent cut in emergency food money. That’s where the meat the pantry distributes comes from. Also, River said the food pantry could serve over 12,000 people this year. The amount of clients has increased each year and “is not showing signs of slowing down.”
Bassett reported that the other half of the steer and the pig would go to the Lake County Youth Home.
People with food or money to donate to the food pantry should take it to Polson Loaves and Fish Pantry, Inc. 10 8th Avenue E.
