ARLEE —As fall creeps closer, the heat was still a factor during the 3rd Annual Fish Hatchery Run in Arlee.
“It was excruciatingly hot and dry,” Mission’s Rose Bear Don’t Walk said after the 3.3-mile race. “At the first corner my mouth was so dry.”
Despite the heat, Bear Don’t Walk placed fourth at the event with a time of 22:52. Teammate Ashley Courville took first with a time of 21:23 and Kaylee Durglo was ninth with 27:30. With the combination of the three times, the Mission girls team took first in Arlee.
“My goal this year is to break the 21 minute mark,” Bear Don’t Walk said. “I want to try to stay consistent and stay inside my time zone.”
According to Head Coach Patrick Murphy the girls’ team this year is comprised of four runners. Typically five runners are needed to place at most meets, but Murphy was proud of the girls’ showing.
“They did great,” Murphy said.
Last year the Mission boys’ team took home the trophy, but the honor this year went to Darby.
Mission’s Paden Alexander did well and took second with a time of 17:38.
“The hill and the heat were the worst,” Alexander said. “The heat made it a lot harder to run.”
Alexander said he placed fourth at Mission’s first meet at Canal Bank Run in Ronan.
Teammates Dillon Evans placed sixth with a time of 19:07 and Ray Matt was 10th with 20:14. There are currently seven runners on the boys’ team. Mission’s Karl Daniels was 25th (25:55), Jarod Smith-Brown was 16th (21:40), Jamie Mullins was 21st (24:08), and Patrick Eickhart was 26th (26:39).
Last Friday Mission competed in the Eureka Invitational. The boys’ team struggled for numbers because half of the team for football and two runners competed for the first time ever.
Courville and Alexander once again placed high and each took second for the girls’ and boys’ teams in Eureka.
Courville finished with a time of 21.20 just seconds behind Felicia Earhart of Plains (21.05). Bear Don’t Walk placed seventh with a time of 22.48, Kaylee Durglo was 11th (24.30) and Courtney Heath was 14th (25.03).
“I was very happy with our girls performance and look for good things from them as we gain a couple more athletes to compete as a full team,” Murphy said.
Alexander finished with a time of 17.31 for the boys. Teammates Stuart Grant was 25th with time of 21.01, Karl Daniels was 32nd (23.41), Patrick Ekhert was 34th (24.33), and Aram Serobyan was 37th (26.28).
“I was also pleased with our boys,” Murphy said. “I can’t wait to get out there and compete with full teams of both boys and girls.”
