Members of the Mission Valley High School Rodeo Club competed in two different rodeos last weekend, spreading themselves between Ennis and Big Sandy.
And the weather was a bit less than cooperative. In Big Sandy, the arena was a foot deep with mud.
On Saturday, Will Powell and Abby Knight teamed up to place third in the ribbon roping of the Wrangler Division with a time of 20.94 seconds. It was so muddy that Knight’s boots were sucked right off her feet. But that didn’t stop the Charlo cowgirl.
“(So) she ran in her bare feet to the finish line,” Nona Gilmore explained. “I have to give all of them credit for still running their events with a foot of mud (in the arena).”
In the high school competition, Shawn George took second in Saturday’s tie down roping with a time of 16.13 seconds, while Emily Schall was third in barrel racing in 18.63 seconds. Schall won the barrel racing average for the weekend by winning Sunday’s barrel racing in 17.97 seconds.
In Ennis on Sunday, Jaylynn Garrison placed in four events, including a second-place finish in goat tying in 8.15 seconds.
