POLSON — The Polson tennis team had it on cruise control last week, with the boys winning three duals and the girls notching four wins.
“(It was a) real good week of tennis,” Polson head coach Bob Hislop said. “(The) girls’ singles players (only) lost one of 16 singles matches on the week and the boys won 10 of 12 singles matches.”
On Tuesday the Polson boys won a 6-1 dual in Columbia Falls. Christian McCurdy came back from a set down to win the number two singles match 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, while the two and three doubles matches proved just as close.
Ian Laimbeer and Will Davey dropped the second set but won the number two doubles match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Sam Peel and Jacob Browne won a close number three doubles match 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-4.
On Friday in Polson, Jane Probst led the Lady Pirates’ in singles, losing just four games over four winning sets. Kayla and Kendyall Rochin also looked solid in winning their match against Columbia Falls, but fell in their Dillon match in three sets.
In number three doubles, Polson’s Audra Engebretson and Jordan Quinn won a three-set comeback against Columbia Falls 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and battled to a 6-4, 7-5 win against Dillon.
On Saturday, the Polson boys beat Columbia Falls and Stevensville by identical 6-1 scores, while the Polson girls beat Dillon 5-2 before sweeping Stevensville 7-0.
Matt Roberts looked solid in winning the number one singles match 6-1, 6-1 against Columbia Falls, then teamed up with Justin Evertz to win the number one doubles match against Stevi 7-5, 6-0.
Hayden Congdon also won a competitive three-set match at number three singles, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Rochin sisters lost another number one doubles match to Dillon’s Emily Paffhausen and Sara Downey, but rebounded to win their singles matches against Stevi.
Coach Hislop emphasized that Roberts had an outstanding week at number one singles, winning all three of his matches very easily and McCurdy had a big win over Vadim Zvygelskiy of Columbia Falls on Tuesday.
“The freshmen and sophomore boys that are playing their first year of varsity are really starting to show signs of improvement. Sam Peel, Will Davey, Ian Laimbeer and Hayden Congdon all are playing very competitively in varsity positions,” Hislop noted. “For the boys to win Divisionals they will have to continue to improve and come up big for us.”
The coach was also pleased with the effort from his girls’ squad.
“Although the number one and number two girls doubles teams lost a pair of matches to the very solid Dillon girls, I thought the tennis was of a very high quality,” Hislop said. “Audra Engebretson and Jordan Quinn (also) went undefeated on the week. Jane Probst played very clean tennis, barely dropping games in four matches. Karmen Borchers is another sophomore that had a fabulous week at two and three singles.”
Polson hosted Ronan on Tuesday, the hits the road with duals in Whitefish on Thursday and Libby on Saturday to finish off the regular tennis season.
