ARLEE — Karen Goulet will be the featured artist at the Killdeer Artisans’ Guild summer show presenting new works from Montana artists at Hangin Art Gallery and Café in on Highway 93 north in Arlee. The opening reception will be held Saturday July 5, from 2-4 p.m. and will remain up until Oct. 24.
The exhibition is titled “Inde,” which means “My Heart” in Ojibwe, as it is part of the Debwe exhibit that is about speaking the truth from the heart.
Goulet, director of the art department at Salish Kootenai College, will give a gallery talk during the reception. Goulet is an artist, poet and educator. Her extraordinary work has been featured in more than 60 national and international exhibitions.
The works on exhibit are described as “…paper weavings reminiscent of basket forms and techniques.” Goulet began making these woven paper shapes after taking a traditional split ash basket-making class. She developed a strong connection to the process, but not having easy access to the black ash used in the baskets, she looked to different materials to weave. What she had readily available were piles of prints she had accumulated over the years as a printmaker.
Goulet is an enrolled member of the White Earth Ojibwe Nation and from the Métis. She was raised to honor the beauty of the natural world while at the same time was taught to speak the truth and stand up for what she believed in. She believes that art can change the world and supports and honors the efforts of those who are working to make a difference through creative means.
The opening reception coincides with the Arlee Celebration Powwow, so come prepared for a full day in Arlee. Come meet the artists, and explore this surprising art destination. Refreshments will be provided. The Gallery Café will have its usual soups, scones, breads, and desserts – all locally sourced and freshly prepared — available to purchase.
