HELENA —The Montana Department of Transportation Civil Rights Bureau announces the awarding of On the Job Training Supportive Services funds to two tribal colleges: Salish Kootenai College and Fort Peck Community College.
The primary objective of the program is to assist with developing and enhancing training and apprenticeship programs to expand the pool of qualified minorities, women and disadvantaged workers within the transportation construction industry. By providing skills training for transportation workers within the program, the end goal is permanent journey-level careers in the highway construction industry.
In 2013, MDT received $63,277 in OJT/SS funding, and those funds were split equally between SKC and Fort Peck. For the year 2014, there will be $83,706 in funds to be split again equally between both schools. Using funds from this program during the school year 2013, Salish enrolled and graduated 40 students from their program; 29 of which were Native American and five were female. Fort Peck enrolled 40 students as well during the year 2013; 36 were Native American and six were female. Of the students enrolled in both schools during 2013, 38 received a Class A CDL license and 16 were placed in highway construction industry positions.
