It was a tough week for Ronan basketball as the Chiefs and Maidens combined to go 0-4 against Bigfork and Columbia Falls.
The Vikings avenged an early-season loss to the Chiefs Saturday as Bigfork earned a 55-43 win at Ronan.
Both teams used the game to promote stroke awareness, sporting red T-shirts to support the cause.
Ronan coach Steve Woll spoke before the game, giving an impassioned speech about losing his father to a stroke in October. At the last game Woll's father attended, he was given a signed game ball. In recognition of stroke awareness, the game was played with that signed ball.
Ronan trailed by one after the opening quarter before the Vikings used a 14-6 run in the second quarter to leave the Chiefs down 28-19 at the half.
Bigfork pushed the lead to 42-27 after three quarters but the Chiefs were able to outscore the Vikings 16-13 in the final eight minutes. It was not enough to erase the deficit, though, as the Vikings picked up the win.
Ronan had two players score in double figures in the loss as J.J. Tanner led the way with 15 points while Kevin Wroblewski added 11.
The Vikings were led by Christian Kerr, who scored a season-high 27 points.
The Chiefs found themselves overpowered Friday as they fell on the road at top-ranked Columbia Falls, 74-41.
The Wildcats built a 26-10 lead after one quarter before pushing their advantage to 49-14 at the half.
The Chiefs were led by Lucas Black with nine points while the Wildcats had three players in double figures, led by Nick Emerson with 17. Emerson also added seven rebounds as Columbia Falls won the battle of the boards, 53-13.
With the losses, the Chiefs fall to 0-3 in conference action and 4-5 overall.
The Maidens were unable to overcome a rough first half Saturday as they fell at home to Class B 10th ranked Bigfork, 45-20.
The Vals jumped out to a 27-10 halftime lead before holding the Maidens scoreless in the third to push the lead to 37-10. Ronan was able to outscore the Vals 10-8 over the final eight minutes but Bigfork picked up the win.
Alice Van Gunten led the Maidens with six points while Mariah Cheff added five, Tailyr Irvine had three and Courtney Clairmont, Ashley Lynch and Trinity Rosenbaum each added two.
Columbia Falls forward Kayla DeWit was too much for the Maidens to handle at home Friday as she scored 26 points as the Wildkats downed Ronan, 58-17.
Only four Maidens were able to score in the contest as Irvine scored seven, Van Gunten had six, Clairmont had three and Cheff added one.
With the losses, the Maidens fall to 0-3 in conference and 0-9 overall.
Both teams are back in action Thursday as the Maidens host Mission while the Chiefs take on the Bulldogs on the road. Both teams play again Saturday as the Maidens travel to face Big Sky while the Chiefs take on Big Sky at home.
