PABLO — The People’s Center welcomed a busload of art students from Florence, Superior and Hellgate High Schools and pre-service art teachers from the University of Montana. The students and teachers stopped on April 25 to see firsthand a sampling of Salish, Kootenai and Pend d‘Oreille art and life. They were headed to the Montana Art Interscholastic Conference, a statewide gathering for high school artists, held at Glacier High School in Kalispell.

Students spend the whole weekend at the conference, select four workshops and bring an art piece of their own for critique sessions. The UM art education students help with running the event and do the critiques, according to Amy York, art teacher at Florence High School.

Megan Elrod and Marina Cherry from Hellgate enjoyed the story of the cradleboard in the People’s Center that had been returned to the Flathead Indian Reservation after so many years.

Sere Nity, a junior at Superior High School, loved the beadwork. It made her wish she had some Native American in her lineage.

Sere was excited for a workshop where “you make a picture of food with vegetables and fruit, and then you get to eat it.”

Megan and Marina were looking forward to an urban art workshop. Marina chose a mosaic workshop, while Megan branched off into a workshop titled “The Wonderful World of Wire.”

UM students Katie Facklam and Lea Christiansen stopped at the People’s Center display about Indian boarding schools. The pair were impressed with the smooth and beautiful beadwork displayed. The students continued to Polson, a gallery walk in Bigfork and a stop at the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell.
