POLSON — The Polson boys and girls played several strong matches Saturday at the Flathead Invitational tennis tournament in Kalispell after a busy day at home Friday.
At the Flathead Invitational, Polson leader Brady Hislop ended up second in the boys’ No. 2 singles division. Hislop defeated Missoula Sentinel’s Koahl DeShazer 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals, where he also beat Hellgate’s Paul Wrobel, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. But in the final match, Hellgate’s Will Ballew proved too much, and Hislop lost 6-1, 6-4. Polson’s Sam Peel came away with the No. 3 singles’ crown after beating Frenchtown’s Jeremy Zug, 6-4, 7-5, in the title match. Peel had also defeated Missoula Big Sky’s Dallas Rosslow 7-5, 7-6, (7-4), in the semifinals after his opponent forfeited the first-round match.
Boys’ duo Will Davey and Ian Laimbeer claimed third place in No. 2 doubles, beating Sentinel’s team of Drum Caras and Quinn Andrew 6-3, 6-0, after falling to Hellgate’s Reid Birgenheier and Ethan Howard in the opening round, 6-4, 6-2. In No. 3 doubles, Hayden Congdon and Dylan McCrumb rose to the top, trouncing teammates Reed Hovenkotter and Sam Kinzle 6-3, 6-1, for the title, after beating Sentinel’s Jesse Mueller and Joey Simonich, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. Congdon and McCrumb also beat Frenchtown’s Tristan Dills and Connor Roettig, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round.
Lady Pirate Whitney Zimmerman charged to the top of the pile in girls’ No. 2 singles, defeating Hellgate’s Wylie Richardson, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round, and Sentinel’s Kaylee Bauer, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. Zimmerman advanced to take on Hellgate’s Toni Mischke, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (4), claiming the title.
Doubles pair Mollybeth Hendrix and Kenzie Clay fell to Hellgate’s Emily Finnegan and Mackenzie Keiper, 9-7, 6-2, in the first round of competition. Karly Rochin and Jordan Quinn lasted a bit longer in No. 2 doubles, taking third place with a win over Sentinel’s Darbi Anderson and Bre Harris, 8-2, after beating Frenchtown’s duo of Isabelle Brooks and Bayne Tilton, 6-3, 6-3, in round one. Hellgate’s Megan Woody and Wren Matelich beat the Polson pair, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals, going on to win the division.
At No. 3 doubles, Karmen Borchers and Audra Engebretson fought through a tough field to win the title, defeating Hellgate’s Rachel Reaves and Hannah Willstein in the final.
At home on Friday, the Polson boys took the win over Whitefish, 5-2, and Bigfork, 4-0, led by Hislop, who beat Bigfork leader Colter Mahlum, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for the second time this season.
Zimmerman didn’t give any ground in her matches with Whitefish’s Simone Craft and Dillon’s Janet Moore, playing perfect games throughout.
Polson is on the road again Friday, traveling to Corvallis and Hamilton.
