It was standing-room-only Dec. 29 in the Ronan Performing Arts’ black box room behind the stage as show choir students lit up the crowd with choreography and song learned that day during the annual Sing-a-thon. Choir students spend the better part of the school year preparing for the Cabaret, which is considered their most popular show of the year.

Show choir director Cathy Gillhouse says students focus on choreography during the 10-hour practice. They already know the music because they receive the songs at the beginning of the school year and have daily practice in school.

This will be Gillhouse’s 30th year as the director of the show choir and the Cabaret. She says some things have changed over the  years, explaining that the practice for the annual event used to be a grueling 24 hours long.

“Those were not very productive,” Gillhouse said. “All the kids were too tired to learn anything. That’s when we cut it down to 10 hours.”

This year’s theme for the cabaret is from the “Laugh-In TV Show,” which is a comedy-based show from the ‘70s.

“I’m excited about it,” Gillhouse added. “The kids were very squirrelly yesterday, but they are good singers and have a lot of energy.”

The annual three-day cabaret was moved up a week this year and will be held the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 3-5.

Until then, the group will continue practicing during class and also hold a few fundraising performances, one of which is a potato bake dinner on Feb. 12.
