Pirates grab third, win challenge game, head to state

KALISPELL – The Pirates have proved they have the drive to succeed by taking third at the Northwest A Divisional Tournament.
In Thursday’s play-in, loser-out game, the Pirates pulled a W against Libby’s Loggers, 55-38. Andrew Weltz logged 21 points for the Pirates and Cedrick Smith added 16.
On Friday, the Pirates fell 48-62 to number one seeded Columbia Falls, outscoring the Wildcats in only one quarter. Smith netted 13 points in the semifinal game.
In Sunday’s consolation game against Frenchtown, the Pirates grabbed the 58-38 victory, sending the Broncs home and clinching third in the tournament. Cedrick Smith swooped by his opponents putting up 18 points for his team. Weltz threw in another 15.
The Pirates competed in the challenge game Monday, Mar. 3 against Whitefish, peaking at the right time of the year and earning the right to play at state by defeating the Bulldogs, 59-47.
