POLSON — The Polson Business Community has a new project in the works — the Armed Forces Memorial Staircase. The proposed staircase will connect 1st Street W. with Riverside Park.
Polson Business Community members Tali Duford and Jackie Cripe are spearheading the push for the staircase.
To fund the project, which will cost approximately $25,000, anyone, or any group who would like to honor a service man or woman who served in the past or who is currently serving can purchase a plaque. Plaques go for $200, measure 8 inches by 6 inches and will be placed on the face of the risers. People heading up the staircase from Riverside Park will be able to read the names.
The PBC contributed $4,000 to start the project. Duford said the project will take about two weeks, and the PBC would like to have it done by the first of July.
To access the stairway, Duford said “nice big crosswalks” will cross 1st Street W. near The Cove and American Eye Care and in front of First Citizens Bank. Duford said the staircase would divert foot traffic from the busier, more dangerous intersection at 1st Street W. and Highway 93.
An added plus, Duford said, would be extra parking when Main Street is torn up for the Streetscape Project in September or for parking for recreational vehicles.
Plans call for a directory at the top of the staircase that would show the way to local businesses, the fire and police departments, the hospital, banks, county offices and parks.
Eventually Duford would like to see benches on the landings and maybe even a wrought-iron arch at the top of the stairs.
