The Ronan High School’s bleachers were full and the wrestling mats a buzz on Saturday as teams from the Western B/C division duked it out on the mats. The Chiefs have had quite a rewarding season, coming in third overall at the meet with a 130 team score and boasting a first place finisher in the 145 pound class, senior Brandon Dumont.

Ronan Head Coach Cory Johnston is pleased with his team leaders. “Brandon’s been a leader for us; he leads by example,” Johnston said. “You can count on him every year. He’s been a staple for our team.”

Other seniors that have made an impact in Johnston eyes are Connor Benn, Ronnie Cullis and Chase Rhine. “Connor’s just a natural leader, and Ron and Chase have really stepped up,” Johnston said. Benn and Cullis both grabbed a second place finish.

Along with their upperclassman, several younger wrestlers have also qualified for a spot in at the State Tournament to be held in Billings Feb. 14-15.

Johnston sees great futures for his kids, especially for his freshman who’ve had a tough but victorious trip through their first year. Because they’ve been wrestling in heavier weight classes, the freshmen have been battling older kids, according to Johnston.

Rounding out the Chief’s big future plans and sophomores Lauren Christopher and Mike Irvine, both finishing in second place at the Divisional Tournament. Also competing at State is Tanner Mead.

“They’ve come through leaps and bounds,” Johnston said. “I expect top four at State from them.”

All in all, Johnston couldn’t be more proud of his kids and is excited for upcoming events. “They are all top caliber,” he said. “It speaks volumes for them.”
