POLSON — An external lockdown at all Polson schools on Jan. 28 had students, staff and parents concerned, but the situation was resolved quickly by the Polson Police and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
“The Polson school district has policies and procedures in place to protect the safety of the students, and today was an example of how that system worked,” according to a press release from Polson Police Chief Wade Nash.
“The administration of each school determined that they would go on external lockdown because of an evolving situation not involving any immediate or direct threats to students or staff. The lockdown was initiated by the schools and not at the request of the Polson Police Department,” Nash continued.
Polson Superintendent Linda Reksten said the district used Blackboard Connect, a computer program, to contact all parents.
While a phone call can be disconcerting, Nash reminded community members that the system is in place to protect the safety of students and staff and asked for cooperation.
The word “lockdown” has a negative stigma, Nash said, but that’s not the case. Students went about their daily routine; the external lockdown merely kept people from entering the building.
