PABLO — On Friday, Feb. 7, Salish Kootenai College Professor Dr. Frank Tyro will present a free program about the polar bears of Churchill, Manitoba at the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theatre on the campus of Salish Kootenai College.
Tyro will answer questions such as: Who started the first systematic study of polar bears in the world? Where is the polar bear capital of the world? What color is polar bear skin? Why is raw meat healthier than cooked? Why didn’t traditional indigenous arctic people suffer from scurvy? Who established the protocols for handling polar bears?
Tyro has visited Churchill, Manitoba 34 times and will present a program on the Great Bear Foundation trips that focus on the incredible learning experience travelers encounter on the Polar Bear Ecology Field Course.
Under the leadership of Dr. Charles Jonkel and Shannon Dohahue, nearly 1,000 people have visited the town nestled on the shores of Hudson Bay, hundreds of miles from the nearest road. The talk will cover not only the bears but also military and cultural history, arctic ecology, polar bear behavior, conservation issues, and explore the tundra, beaches, and boreal forest. The talk begins at noon and will last approximately one hour. A question and answer period will follow.
