The first home meet for the Flathead Lake Monsters took place Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Mission Valley Aquatic Center. The Flathead Valley Team Cup meet drew 119 swimmers, including 56 Lake Monsters, 39 Kalispell Aquatic Team Swimming (KATS) participants and 24 Wave Riders from Whitefish. A perpetual trophy, created by MVA Board Member Connie Plaissay, boasted a large chunk of driftwood in front of blanks, where the winning team’s plaque will be affixed each year.
Winning the inaugural meet was the KATS with a score of 670, followed closely by the Lake Monsters at 609. The Wave Riders came in third with a total of 421 points.
Both the Lake Monsters Youth Team, ages 6 to 18, and the Masters Swim Team, ages 19 and up, competed in 23 different categories, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and team relays.
The Lake Monsters performed extremely well, with many swimmers taking first place in the final heats.
