RONAN — On Monday the Ronan School Board voted to approve the construction of several track and field additions to the new track, field and football field complex.
Superintendent Andy Holmlund explained that he has received two bids for the track event additions, which include additional shot put runs, jump runways, pits and pole vaulting area.
Holmlund said that both bids were under $30,000 and other accessories such as storage will cost the district between $25,000 and $30,000.
The school board also approved moving the 5th grade class to the Ronan Middle School for the 2011-2012 school year.
“I’m not overly excited to have the 5th graders move to the middle school, but we’re out of space,” Ronan School Board Trustee Mark Clary said.
Because of overcrowding issues at K. William Harvey Elementary School, the school board had been considering the move for a few weeks.
School administrators intend to keep the 5th grade contained in another part of the Ronan Middle School, separated from other middle school students.
After the first reading of nine revised school policies, the Ronan School Board reviewed the Annual Goals and Objectives Policy.
“There are concerns in our staff that we are not having open lines of communication like we should,” Ronan Trustee Wendy Thingelstad said.
Trustee Carmel Couture also voiced her concern.
“I think we should not just go over this once a year, but remind ourselves about it throughout the year,” Couture said of the strategic policy. “So the board can remind themselves why they’re here.”
Trustees also discussed the possibility of instating monthly work meetings.
After the school board declared trustee Jim Blow’s position vacant, chairman Chris Lynch warmly thanked Blow for his two years of service on the school board.
The next school board meeting will be held on August 10 at 7 p.m. in the library.
