RONAN — After approving an ordinance that prohibited the sale of medical marijuana within city limits on June 29, the city council passed another ordinance on Monday prohibiting the use of medical marijuana “anywhere upon public property or within the public view” within Ronan’s city limits

“We can regulate the business of selling, but we cannot say that you cannot have a medicine,” Mayor Kim Aipperspach explained.

He compared the use of medical marijuana to the use of any other prescription drug and said the council couldn’t forbade the use of medical marijuana completely, but could control it so it’s not used in public areas.

The Ronan City Police were also present to ask the council’s permission to buy a 2002 Chevrolet Impala from Utah. At present, the police own seven vehicles, three of which are in condition to drive, Ronan Police Chief Dan Wadsworth said.

Assistant Police Chief Art Walgren added that the vehicle will conserve gas because it has a six-cylinder engine, instead of the usual eight-cylinder.

The council approved the purchase of the Chevrolet Impala.

Harry Whalen from Montana’s Rural Water Department proposed a plan for a new water rate in order to support the city’s new Water Project.

Montana code annotated states that the water and sewer department have to be sustainable, Whalen said.

“The main thing is, we are doing this for development,” Mayor Kim Aipperspach said.

The city council decided to have two public forums regarding the proposed water rates and voted to proceed with bond counseling regarding the proposed water rate.

City Council also approved the following matters:

Ronan Police Department request to spend funds from Drug Fund

Open container permit for Pioneers Days

Open container permit for the 30th Ronan High School Reunion

Open container permit for the St. Luke Company Picnic

Street Closure Application of 1st Ave SW for the Pioneer Days Car Show on July 31

The next city council meeting will be held on July 26 at 6 p.m. at Ronan City Hall.
