RONAN — At a Ronan City Council meeting on Monday, the council approved the appointment of Patrick Nobles as the new part-time Ronan police officer.

“Most of the (police) departments have only been hiring experienced people,” Ronan Assistant Police Chief Art Walgren said.

Nobles, a native to Polson, graduated from a police academy but hasn’t been able to find a law enforcement position because many experienced police officers have been competing for the same positions.

Walgren said that unlike Nobles, most part-time police officers have not graduated from a police academy. He explained that Nobles’ schooling will certainly benefit the Ronan Police Department.

He also mentioned that the department has lost several part-time officers recently and an extra officer will be helpful for the upcoming events.

The council also approved a resolution of intent to increase rates and charges for the city’s water system.

The move will ensure opportunities for the public to discuss the increase water rates with the city council at two public hearings.

The Ronan City Council approved the following:

• An amendment of preliminary conditional approval of the Norgaard Acres to Ronan to allow phased development.

• An amendment to add the $50,000 Spring Creek Project to the 2009-2010 budget.

The next council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9.
