CHARLO – Charlo head coach Mike Brown knew his boys would be tested down the final stretch of the season, and last week did just that for the Vikings. Charlo began its week up the road in Pablo Tuesday, Jan. 24, taking on a talented Two Eagle River team before hosting Noxon later in the week.
Against Two Eagle, Charlo got off to a sluggish start, allowing the Eagles to lead early, 15-7. The Vikings rallied in the second with 18 points to Two Eagle’s 12 to come within two points at the break.
Both teams scored 10 points in the third, as Two Eagle led 37-35 at the beginning of the final stanza. Both teams came out in the fourth quarter to score impressively. The Eagles led by four points with eight seconds remaining, and Webb O’Neill nailed a 3-pointer to pull within one, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles edged Charlo, winning 56-55.
O’Neill paved the way for Charlo, scoring 16 points, while Dillon Delaney added 14. Tra Ludeman also finished with double digits, scoring 11.
Two Eagle was led by Marcus Brown, who put up 15 points, while Artie Mendoza finished with 13. Clayton Malatare dished out 10 assists, eight rebounds and five points for the Eagles.
With the loss, Charlo fell to 6-2 in conference and 10-2 overall, while the Eagles improved to 5-4 in conference and 9-4 overall.
Things didn’t get much easier for the Vikings as they hosted a difficult Noxon team in a lengthy game Jan. 27. It was a battle from the tip-off as both teams were fueled by the high-intensity match-up.
Noxon rocketed out to a 17-8 lead, but Charlo battled back in the second quarter, matching Noxon’s 10 points to keep within nine points at halftime.
Charlo hung in with the Red Devils during the third quarter, but Noxon continued to chip away at their lead. By the beginning of the fourth, Noxon led 49-35.
In the fourth, the Red Devils continued to roll, outscoring Charlo 15-9 to secure a 64-44 victory and improve to 8-1 in conference and 8-4 overall.
Dillon Delaney led Charlo with 14 points, while Kolten Andrews added 10. O’Neill contributed nine points.
For Noxon, four players finished with double digits, with Oliver Grupenhoff leading the way with 13 points. Banks Stocking finished with 12, while Jordan Eichert and Travis Tammaro contributed 11 each.
The Vikings fell to 6-3 in conference and 10-3 overall with the loss.
Charlo continues its season Feb. 3 on the road against Superior before hosting Philipsburg Feb. 4 on senior night.
