NINEPIPE — Wearing a seatbelt saved the life of an Idaho man who fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his truck just past Ninepipes Lodge on Highway 93 Thursday.
According to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Terry Rosenbaum, the man fell asleep at the wheel while traveling southbound at approximately 3 p.m. The small white pickup truck crossed into the northbound lane, veered off the roadway and eventually drifted back toward the road until it flipped onto a guardrail.
When responders arrived on scene, they expected a fatality, but the driver didn’t have a scratch on him, Trooper Rosenbaum said.
“Wearing his seatbelt saved his life,” he said. “It just shows how important it is to wear it.”
According to Rosenbaum, the driver was not impaired. The name of the individual was not available. Ronan Ambulance, Ronan Volunteer Fire Department and Coulter Towing helped clear the scene.
