RONAN — Rick and Vicki Wheeler attended Monday night’s Ronan City Council Meeting with the Spring Creek Lift Station — and its malfunctions — on their mind.
The couple’s property on 5th Ave. SW abuts the Spring Creek Lift Station.
The pair claims that since the new lift station has been completed, water has been running off the lift station, filling their back yard and creating a small pond when it rains.
They claim the new lift station was built higher than the previous lift station, and extends into their property three feet more than the one foot that the city paid them for.
They also say that their backyard smells like sewer and part of their yard needs landscaping where the tractors tore up the ground, creating an uneven surface impossible to mow.
The alley adjacent to their yard that leads to the station was supposed to be graveled and a street lamp was supposed to be replaced, Rick said.
“You sit down there and that’s all you smell is sewer,” Rick Wheeler said. “I don’t want to live like that.”
The council discussed ways to remedy the issue and indicated that they would send city workers to the property to further investigate the situation.
They also mentioned that they had kept the retainer from the construction company that worked on the Spring Creek Lift Station.
In other business city council discussed the preliminary budget and noted that taxes came in at approximately 80 percent.
A work meeting was scheduled for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. to discuss a possible street Special Improvement District, and the preliminary budget was also briefly mentioned.
The Ronan City Council approved the following items:
• Minutes from July 26
• Payment of claims as of Aug. 9
• Open container application for the Celebration of Life on Aug. 14
The next Ronan City Council meeting will be held on Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at city hall.
