COLUMBIA FALLS — In what head coach Larry Smith called a “humbling” experience for the two-time defending state champion Lady Pirate softball team, Polson fell to the Columbia Falls Wildkats April 10, 8-3. Sometimes, though, a little humility is a good thing, Smith noted.
“That was probably our ugly game of the year,” he said. “(But) the girls are feeling good; they’re gonna come back.”
Only three Lady Pirates — Riley Kenney, Jaylin Kenney and Ashley Johnson — managed hits against the Wildkats, so the team’s been doing a lot of batting practice in preparation for a busy week that started Tuesday with a home game against Libby, rescheduled from Thursday, April 12. Polson also takes on Hamilton at home at 4 p.m. Thursday and travels to Whitefish Saturday.
“We play some good teams … I think (a busy week) is what we need,” Smith said. “We need to get in motion here; the more games we play, the better we play.”
In Columbia Falls, the Wildkats totaled 10 hits off Polson All-State pitcher Shalaina Duford. Johnson and Riley Kenney each went 2 for 3 for the Lady Pirates.
The loss brought Polson to 1-2 on the season; the Lady Pirates had previously defeated Columbia Falls 14-1 March 30.
