PABLO — The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes filed an appeal with the Interior Board of Appeals of the United States Department of the Interior.
The appeal came in response to a Sept. 20 decision by BIA Northwest Regional Director Stanley Speaks to hold a secretarial election.
The People’s Voice requested the election so CSKT tribal members could vote on a proposed amendment to the CSKT constitution. The proposed amendment would allow the membership to file a petition of at least one-third of the eligible voters of the Flathead Reservation, to recall any tribal councilperson from office for malfeasance, or any part of the CSKT’s Constitution and By-Laws.
The Interior Board of Appeals gave the tribes until Dec. 9 to show cause why the appeal should not be dismissed.
