POLSON — Mission Valley Elks Lodge #1695 held their annual Hoops Shoot Sunday, Nov. 24 in Polson with young basketball athletes coming from around the valley to show their stuff at the rim.
Age groups ranged from 8-13, both boys and girls, with possibilities to move on from local lodge competition to district and state — and then on to “the big show,” the national competition held in Springfield, Mass., April 10 -13, 2014.
Each win in the free throw contest results in a step up to the next level.
The young athletes that win the national titles are awarded with their name honored in a permanent engraving at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Last year the event boasted 1.5 million participants from around the country.
“Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot has been around for 50 years,” said David Rensvold, local area and district director. “We take a lot of pride in this program.”
This year’s district competition will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. at the Joe McDonald Health and Athletic Center of Salish Kootenai College. The young athletes that win in the district competition will compete to advance to State.
