As the light snow sprinkled the Charlo field Saturday afternoon, the Vikings fell in the game that would take them to a State Championship opportunity. Ennis overtook the Vikings 50-14, knocking Charlo out of contention for the State title.
The Vikings fought valiantly, even after losing their starting quarterback Michael Delaney to a knee injury in the second quarter; but they just couldn’t hold on.
Yet all in all Coach Mike Krahn was pleased with his boys.
“We knew Ennis was a good team,” he said. “We played hard but were just outgunned.”
With tears from the sideline and tears from the fans, Krahn said a few words to take to heart: “We should never be disappointed in ourselves.”
When a key player gets injured, it takes big feet to fill big shoes, and Jacen Peterson did just that. Peterson stepped into the role of QB and threw two touchdowns, going 7 for 8 on 83 yards.
“Jacen did a great job stepping in,” Krahn said.
As the season ended for the Vikings, Coach Krahn gave praise to his assistants Adrian Roylance and Jim Peterson.
“The assistants never get enough appreciation and they should,” Krahn said. Also Krahn thanked his seniors. “The toughest part is saying goodbye to the seniors,” he said. “I’ve know most of these kids since they sat in my classroom since the sixth grade. They put the time in, they’re great kids.”
In regards to the rest of the team, Krahn “couldn’t be prouder. They battled ‘till the end.”
