POLSON – After a few weeks of practicing on their own teammates, the Polson, Mission and Ronan wrestling teams began their seasons this past weekend against a field of 14 teams, with all three placing high against the stiff competition.
Polson led the local teams, placing fifth overall with 95.5 points, while Ronan finished sixth with a score of 75, and Mission followed closely behind in seventh place with 74 points.
Polson’s Carlos Quinones took first place in the 112-pound class after he pinned Gavyn Wilson of Frenchtown in 3:46. Polson senior Alex Nystrom also advanced to the championship bout in the 140-pound class, but was defeated via technical fall against Corvallis’ Travis Davis.
Teammate Taylor Martin secured a third place finish after he pinned Wade Gascon of Thompson Galls in 1:15. In the 119-pound category, Pirate Dylan Moll took fourth place with a 3-2 decision loss to Glacier’s Christian Knopp.
In the 125-pound class, Polson’s Craig Feistner took second place in the championship match with a 4-2 loss to Sentinel’s Alek Mitchell.
Ronan’s Nate Brooks had a successful first match, finishing the tournament in fourth place in the 140-pound class after he was pinned by Glacier’s Jackson Barber in 4:44. In the 105-pound category, Ronan’s Cole Snyder took fourth place after he was pinned by Josh Venema of Corvallis. Teammate Colby Roberts advanced to the 215-pound championship before being pinned by Sentinel’s Jayden Wilson in 34 seconds. In the 160-pound category, Ronan’s Dustin Goldsby took third place with a 7-2 decision over teammate Quenton Denton of the Ronan junior varsity team.
For the Mission-Charlo Bulldogs, Jacen Petersen took second place after he lost in a decision to Corvallis’ Riley Nagel. Fellow team leader Scotty Gilleard also made it to the championship bout in the 130-pound class, but lost to Sentinel’s Brandon Edwards by a 12-6 decision.
Teammate Baret Sargent advanced to the championship round, where he was toppled by Hamilton’s Forest Fortney in the 189-pound class.
Also placing for the Bulldogs, Chad Anderson took fourth against Corvallis’ James Weidow, losing in an 8-4 decision.
After it was all said and done, seven different wrestlers from Polson, Ronan and Mission-Charlo advanced to the championship match, while an additional seven made it to the third-fourth place match.
