Kaylee Larson, a 2009 graduate of Ronan High School and daughter of Teresa and Lucky Larson, has achieved her goals at Wenatchee Valley Community College in Wenatchee, Wash. Over the past two years in college, Larson has been turning heads on the fields and also in the classroom, excelling with a 3.50 GPA in school, and a .375 batting average on the field.
Recently Larson was selected as the 2011 Eastern Region first-team all-conference shortstop by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Following a successful season as a freshman, she was chosen to lead her team as the co-captain.
“It’s a big deal for me,” Larson said. “Knowing I gave it my all really feels good.”
According to Larson, she thought she worked pretty hard at softball while attending Ronan High School, but was surprised at how much more intense the sport became while in college.
“Coach kicked me up to a whole new level,” she said. “She made all of us so much better. We practiced three-and-a-half to five hours every day.”
Larson says that she has accomplished her goals on the softball field, and will be moving on to volleyball this fall at Montana State University Northern in Havre.
“I thought softball was my life during high school,” Larson said. “I accomplished what I wanted in softball and went out on a good note. I want something new to challenge me, which is why I went with volleyball.”
According to Larson, she played softball, volleyball and basketball during her four years at Ronan. Throughout that time, her love for volleyball flourished, which is why she plans to return to it this fall.
“I’m ready to play a new sport,” she said. “It’s time to challenge myself in new ways at the college level.”
Larson smacked seven homeruns and drove in 33 RBIs during the 2011 softball season. The accomplishments contributed to her being selected most valuable player for the Wenatchee Knights, and let her end her college softball career on a high note.
Larson helped her team achieve their best record in school history after the team finished the season 40-7. The Knights then finished third in the 2011 NWAACC tournament held in Portland, Ore., and were awarded the Eastern Region champions for the sixth consecutive year.
