The latest in a string of investigations into alleged illegal activity within the Lake County Sheriff’s Office has caught the attention of the Montana Legislature’s Law and Justice Interim Committee. The committee voted Dec. 15 to follow up on an investigation by the Attorney General’s office into a perjury allegation against Undersheriff Karey Reynolds.
After a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy filed a complaint with the Lake County Attorney’s Office alleging that Reynolds lied on a sworn document, Sheriff Jay Doyle said he immediately forwarded the information to the state’s Division of Criminal Investigations.
“And they’re currently doing that investigation,” Doyle said. “The Division of Criminal Investigations has been conducting interviews.”
As the investigation is ongoing, Doyle said he couldn’t share any more information.
Per the Law and Justice committee’s vote, “Public Safety Officer Standards and Training certification and issues surrounding Lake County Sheriff’s Office” will be included on the agenda for the group’s April 19-20 meeting. Sen. Steve Gallus (D-Butte) also requested the committee get a legal opinion on its authority to examine allegations related to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 23-24.
