POLSON — Dr. Frank Tyro, award-winning filmmaker and renowned observer of polar bears, will present a program recounting experiences from the 33 trips he has made to Churchill, Manitoba, the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” at the Friday, Nov. 8, meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm.
Each year in mid to late October, polar bears move to the Cape Churchill area on the west coast of Hudson Bay where the fresh water ice floes coming down the large rivers are packed against Cape Churchill by the northwest winds. This becomes the first ice shelf from which the bears can hunt ringed seals, their primary food source.
Dr. Tyro’s program will focus on the bears and other animals that inhabit this area and the Great Bear Foundation’s trips to bring travelers to learn about the geology, environment, people, ecology, and biology of polar bears, birds and beluga whales. He has visited Churchill over a period of 29 years observing the animals, changes in the climate, and attitudes toward bears.
Tyro has been at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo since 1984 where he is professor, general manager, and chief engineer of KSKC, local public TV.
The presentation will begin at noon at the Rural Fire Department building on Regatta Road west of the bridge in Polson. Anyone interested in learning is welcome to attend.
