ARLEE — Hangin Art Gallery in Arlee turned 10 years old this summer, and will celebrate this week in the rebuilt “Log Cabin Bar” building. Through the years the community gallery has been a venue for fine artists, poets, musicians, writers and performance artists to share their talents. It has also provided opportunities to encourage the artistic development of children and adults through after school art programs, community school poetry and writing workshops, theater and movement workshops and lots of music.
To celebrate their 10th anniversary, a variety of artists will be providing a wide range of art events open to the public from Wednesday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 27.
A very special friend of the Gallery, William S. Yellow Robe, Jr., nationally known playwright and poet (Assiniboine, Fort Peck) has been offering community writing workshops and directed readings of plays by Native playwrights at the Gallery since the summer of 2001 — three years before the actually opening of the building to the public. Yellow Robe, Jr., has agreed to come to Montana from his home in Connecticut to lead a “Celebration of Native Writers,” including Salish elder Victor A. Charlo, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. A buffet dinner catered by Marianne Forrest will be held prior to the performance. Tickets for the dinner and performance, purchased in advance, are $30 per person. Call (406) 726-5005 to make reservations. Doors open for the performance only at 6:30 p.m., and will include a free will offering.
Everyone is invited to join in on some or all of the celebration activities and events. All ages are welcome. And, as always, the Gallery provides a family friendly alcohol and drug free environment.
