Despite a few gaps in weight divisions, Polson wrestling coach Bob Owen says he’s excited for the upcoming wrestling season. The Pirates are returning six State placers and have 24 athletes signed up for the team.
Last year, the Pirates won the Class A Divisional tournament and took seventh overall at State.
Returning State placers for the Pirates include junior Craig Feistner, who will most likely move into the 125-130 pound class. Feistner finished second at State last season.
Another big contributor to the Polson squad will be senior Josiah Clairmont, who took third at State last year and will continue to represent Polson’s heavyweight class.
Also returning is Carlos Quinones, a third place finisher at State. Quinones was in the 98-pound class last year, but Owen said he hit a growth spurt and will most likely be in the 119-pound class.
Grappling in the 130-pound class will be Mike Devlin, who took fourth place at State last year. Sophomore Dylan Moll took fifth at State last year and will most likely compete in the 119-125-pound class this season.
Lucas Polk will be returning as well, after placing sixth at State last year in the 98-pound class, but he is expected to move up to the 112 class.
“We have a couple others with varsity experience as well,” Own added. “Senior Alex Nystrom and junior Drew Fouty will add a lot for our team.”
“I would like to defend our divisional championship,” he said. “With Ronan moving to Class B, Frenchtown came into the league, and they are a perennial power in the south. They’re gonna be real tough.”
Owen says he expects senior Alex Nystrom to lead his team this season.
“Alex is a really good leader,” Owen said. “He just came off a terrific cross-country season, and his confidence has grown. I’m looking for him to lead our team.”
The Polson Pirate varsity wrestling team begins its season Dec. 3 when the Pirates host the Polson Invitational at 9 a.m.
