CHARLO – The Lady Vikings are looking strong as they tie up their regular season this coming week before the district tourney in Noxon beginning Oct. 29. The Lady Vikings were tested last week as they played a trio of talented teams. On Thursday, Charlo hosted Hot Springs on senior night, where they swept the Savage Heat 25-14, 25-23, 25-17, winning 3-0. With the win, Charlo improved to 8-1 in conference and 11-1 overall.

Rachel Hoyt led her team as she finished the game with nine kills and two blocks. Kelsey Blevins continued her solid season, contributing 12 digs and seven aces. Dawn Blevins added 16 assists and two blocks.

Head coach Sheryl Kain says she’s impressed with the way her team is shaping up, but they still need to work on defense.

“We still need to get coverage down,” Kain said. “People are still finding our weak spots.”

Kain added the distractions of senior night might have contributed to their sloppy play in the second game.”

“We won the first game, and the girls probably thought we’d win easily,” she added. “It was closer than it probably should’ve been.”

For Hot Springs, Alyssa Foster led her team with 10 digs and four kills.

The Lady Vikings kept busy, traveling to Thompson Falls the next day to face a talented Lady Bluehawk team. Thompson Falls opened up the game with a 25-11 win before Charlo rallied to win the second match 25-23.

Kain says Lady Bluehawk Kelsey Fitchett hurt Charlo more than Hope Reid, which was a little surprising for Kain.

“We couldn’t pass, hit, or anything,” Kain said.

The Lady Vikings won the second match, as Thompson Falls relaxed a bit, allowing Charlo to get into their own rhythm.

Kain said Charlo should’ve won the game, as they were the reason they lost, not Thompson Falls.

“It was pretty much all us, it wasn’t really them,” Kain said. “In the third game we were ahead by a few points and let them have it.”

The Lady Bluehawks picked up wins of 27-25 and 25-13, earning a 3-1 win, while also handing Charlo their second loss of the season.

Kinley Pope played a solid game, earning 22 digs for her team, while Deondra Brown added 15 kills. Dawn Blevins added 11 assists, while Kelsey Blevins had one ace.

On Saturday, Charlo didn’t have far to travel to St. Ignatius to face an up-and-coming Mission team.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t make it easy for Charlo, as Mission came out as the hot team, winning 25-17 in the opening match.

Charlo rallied in the following three games, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 to pull out the 3-1 win.

Derika Stipe led the Lady Vikings, finishing the game with six aces and three blocks. Brown added 19 kills, while Dawn Blevins added 15 assists. Kelsey Blevins led Charlo with 21 digs.

With the win, Charlo improved to 12-2, while Mission fell to 8-8. On Tuesday Charlo played conference leader Superior, and the Lady Vikings play Arlee on the road on Saturday.
