It was a tough week for the Polson Pirate boys’ basketball team. The boys dropped two games, first a nonconference match-up with Corvallis on the road, followed by a road loss to Northwestern A foe Libby. The two losses moved the Pirates to 2-4 in conference and 7-9 overall.

Against Corvallis, Polson came out strong to take a first-quarter lead, 18-11. It remained a closely contested game in the second, with the Pirates leading by six points entering the break.

In the third, Corvallis went on an impressive 15-6 run that proved to be the difference, as the Blue Devils were able to squeeze out a marginal victory, winning 54-50.

The Pirates had a hard time containing Corvallis’ Riley Bradshaw, who put up 13 of his 28 points in the final frame to give his team the edge. Polson missed big man Tyler Krell, a key player for the team, due to an injury.

Zach Camel led Polson with 17 points, while Vince DiGiallonardo added nine more and Riley Sampson contributed eight.

Bradshaw led Corvallis with 28 points, while Jansen Jessop added nine.

The Pirates looked to lift their spirits on Saturday, traveling to Libby to take on a struggling Loggers team.

The Loggers led early on, securing a 13-11 lead after the first period, but the game remained tight throughout the first half and into the third. At the half, Libby led 26-25.

It was more of the same in the third, with Libby pulling away little by little, outscoring Polson 13-11 to boost its lead to three points.

It was a completely different ball game in the fourth, as both teams seemed to find their rhythm on offense, but Libby’s 32-point explosion was too much for the Pirates to contain, granting Libby a 70-58 Northwestern A victory.

Cody Fischer led Polson with 17 points, while DiGiallonardo knocked in 14 and Camel added 13.

For Libby, Jared Winslow shot a game-high 24 points, while Josh Foote contributed 17.

Kraig Nelson topped out the trio of double-digit scorers with 10.

The win gave Libby its first conference win of the season, going 1-6 in conference and 4-12 overall.

The Pirates played Frenchtown on the road Feb. 14 and host Whitefish Feb. 18.
