BILLINGS – In a rematch of the Western B-C Divisional final between Philipsburg’s Barrett Stanghill and St. Ignatius-Charlo’s Jacen Petersen, Stanghill again came out on top, earning his second consecutive State Champion title in the 160-division and finishing with a 34-0 record.
Joining Petersen in the final rounds of the tournament was teammate Scotty Gilleard (130), who made it to the third-place round, defeating Florence’s Kody Davidson by fall in 2:16.
Petersen and Gilleard were the only two local wrestlers in the championship and third-place rounds.
Four local grapplers made it to the fifth-place round of the State Tournament. St. Ignatius-Charlo’s Jamie Mullins (105) lost to Cody Humphrey in the fifth-place round; Arlee’s Leif Rova (160) defeated Sheperd’s Calen Carpenter 9-3; teammates Clayton Trimble (189) defeated Choteau’s Greg Hinojosa 11-6; and Baker’s Dustin Irgens (215) defeated Cody North 9-2.
In the semifinals, Gage Currier of Colstrip defeated Jamie Mullins in a fall at 1.06. In 130, Taylor French of Forsyth defeated Gilleard 4-0. Eventual 160-pound champion Stanghill slipped past Rova with a fall at 1.14, and Petersen took down Choteau’s Cole Werdal with a technical fall, 16-0.
Top-ranked Forsyth finished with 211 team points and five individual champions. Choteau (161.5) was second and Colstrip (118.5) was third. Western B-C champ Ronan (85) took fifth. St. Ignatius-Charlo (56.5) took 14th, and Arlee (51) was 16th out of a total of 39 teams at the State Tournament, which produced an impressive three four-time champions in Chinook’s Ben Stroh, Conrad’s Luke Schlosser and Glasgow’s Luke Zeiger.
