POLSON – Every week, the Polson Lady Pirates continue to improve and have become a huge threat in Class A hoops. Last week, Polson crushed Corvallis in a nonconference match-up at home before traveling to Libby, where the Lady Pirates started strong to down the Lady Loggers.
Against Corvallis, Polson got off to a strong start, going on a 7-0 run before the Lady Blue Devils hit one free throw to get on the board with 4:19 remaining in the first period. At the beginning of the second, Polson led 13-4.
The Pirates struggled early in the second quarter, going scoreless for the first minute and a half, but with six minutes left before the break, Polson got back into its rhythm, taking a 12-point lead after Heidi Rausch drove the ball in for a layup. With 22 seconds remaining in the second, Riley Kenney nailed both of her free throws to give Polson a 29-7 lead heading into the break.
The Lady Pirates broke the game wide open in the third, going on a 25-5 run. With two minutes remaining in the third, Kenney hit a fade-away jumper, giving Polson a 50-12 lead. Polson continued to control Corvallis in the fourth, coasting to a 60-18 win.
Kenney paced the Lady Pirates with 24 points, while Heidi Rausch added 12. Anna DiGiallonardo topped out the trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points.
For Corvallis, Lakyn Connors led her team with eight points. The loss moved the Lady Blue Devils to 1-14 overall.
On Saturday, the Lady Pirates looked to improve their conference record by taking on the Lady Loggers on the road. Polson started out hot, leading 13-4 at the beginning of the second frame, and went on an explosive 21-8 run before halftime to lead 34-12 at the break.
Libby held Polson to only five points in the third. The Lady Loggers attempted to close the gap, pulling within 17, but it was not enough as Polson ran away with a 48-30 win.
Kenney led Polson with 16 points, while DiGiallonardo put up 13. Mariah Hamel added nine for the Lady Pirates, who improved to 5-1 in conference and 13-3 overall.
For Libby, Hannah England led the way with seven points, while Hailey Craig added six. The loss moved Libby to 1-6 in conference and 4-13 overall.
Polson played Frenchtown Feb. 14 at home, and hosts Whitefish Feb. 18.
